A Saturday Afternoon Kind of Wine- Lulu B. Pinot Grigio

In continuing my tasting tour of Lulu B.’s wines, I had the chance to try their Pinot Grigio.  It’s simple, straight forward, and perfect for a Saturday afternoon with friends.

About the Wine- From the Winery

Lulu B. Pinot Grigio is from the Trento, Fiuli, and Veneto regions of Italy.  It has 12.5% alcohol and retails for around $10.  For more information see www.lulub.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

LuLu B. Pinot Grigio pours a pale straw color in the glass.  It has a crisp nose with aromas of pear and citrus.  The palate is light with clean flavors of pineapple, pear, and lemon that lead into a tangy, citrus finish.  While there isn’t anything complex about this wine, there doesn’t have to be.  It’s a great wine to open on a Saturday afternoon with great friends and even better conversation.  Cheers!

My Wine Rating- B-

Food Pairing Suggestions- This wine pairs well with pasta with shrimp, a salad with roasted vegetables and chicken, or as an apéritif.

Don’t Underestimate “The Birdman”

The next wine I want to feature in my picks of affordable wine choices for your end of summer BBQ is “The Birdman”, a Pinot Grigio from Big House.  It’s not a fancy wine (you can even find it in a box (gasp!)) and I must admit I was a little prejudiced before I tried it…but, believe it or not, it’s actually pretty good!

About the Wine- From the Winery

Big House “The Birdman” 2010 Pinot Grigio is 100% Pinot Grigio from California.  It has 13.5% alcohol and retails for $9.99.  For more information see www.BigHouseWine.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

The Birdman pours a pale yellow in the glass.  The nose has aromas of ripe cantaloupe, grapefruit, and peach.  The palate is full of soft, sweet tastes of melon and citrus.  Flavors of grapefruit come alive in the finish and add a needed touch of bitterness to even out the fruity palate.  This approachable, refreshing wine is sure to cool you down on a warm, summer afternoon.  Grab a bottle (or box) and enjoy with friends and family!

My Wine Rating- B-

Food Pairing Suggestions- This Pinot Grigio pairs well with grilled chicken, a pizza with goat cheese and shrimp, or with smoked fish.

Wines for a Summer Afternoon- Cupcake Vineyards 2010 Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc

It was pretty hot today in Southern California and I came home from work craving a refreshing glass (or two) of wine.  Cupcake Vineyards kindly sent me a bottle of their 2010 Pinot Grigio and 2010 Sauvignon Blanc.  This seemed like the perfect way to end a long day and explore a couple of new bottles of wine.

About the Wines- From the Winery

Cupcake 2010 Pinot Grigio is 100% Pinot Grigio from the D.O.C. Trentino region of Italy. It has 12.5% alcohol and retails for $13.99.

Cupcake 2010 Sauvignon Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. It has 13% alcohol and retails for $13.99.

For more information on either wine see www.Cupcakevinyard.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

Cupcake 2010 Pinot Grigio

The Pinot Grigio pours a pale gold in the glass.  The nose is mellow with notes of tropical fruit, pear, and lemon.  The wine is creamy on the palate and refreshing at the same time.  It tastes of pineapple, citrus, and honeydew and has a citrus packed finish that is a little bitter.  There is not a lot of depth or complexity to this Pinot Grigio but it is definitely a decent wine considering it is readily available for around $8.

My Wine Rating- C+ (definitely worthy of a try, especially if you are a Pinot Grigio fan)

Food Pairing Suggestions- This wine pairs well with shellfish, linguine with white clam sauce, or a caprese salad.

Cupcake 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc pours a pale white gold in the glass.  The nose is lively with aromas of citrus and grass (but not overly grassy like some Sauvignon Blancs).  The wine tastes of lemon, grapefruit, and sweet pear with a crisp and tangy finish.  This is a wonderfully clean and refreshing wine that I am finding perfect for this warm afternoon.  A zesty Sauvignon Blanc that is an incredible value!

My Wine Rating- B

Food Pairing Suggestions- Pairs perfectly with a crab and avocado salad or oysters on the half shell

A Refreshing Pinot Grigio From Luna Vineyards

One of the last times I was in Napa, my husband and I stopped into Luna Vineyards for a tasting.  They have a beautiful tasting room located on the Silverado trail in Napa (a little touristy but still a nice winery).  We tried many of their wines and brought a couple of bottles home with us, including their 2008 Napa Valley Pinot Grigio.  Today I opened up the bottle and enjoyed a glass on a beautiful, sunny California afternoon.

About the Wine- From the Winery

Luna's Tasting Room in Napa

Luna 2008 Napa Valley Pinot Grigio is aged in stainless steel tanks (96% of the juice) and French oak barrels (6% of the juice).  It is 95% Pinot Grigio and 5% Chardonnay.  The Luna has 14.1% alcohol and retails for $18 (but can easily be found for $10-14) .  For more information see www.LunaVineyards.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

Luna 2008 Pinot Grigio pours a white gold in the glass.  The nose is crisp with notes of citrus and pear.  Refreshing tastes of grapefruit, green apple, and guava fill the palate.  The Luna is a smooth and balanced Pinot Grigio.  Overall, it is easy drinking and perfect for this summer afternoon.  It would pair nicely with grilled scallops or a pizza topped with shrimp.  Cheers!

My Wine Rating- B+
