Weekend Wine and Food Pairing- Planked Salmon and Pinot Noir

I love grilling in the summer (or all year round for that matter).  I eat a lot of fish so I am always looking for fish dishes that are grill-friendly along with a great bottle of wine.  One of my favorite fish to grill is salmon.  I often grill it on a cedar plank with some fresh herbs and spices along with a little squeeze of lemon.

When it comes to pairing wine with salmon, an earthy Pinot Noir can’t be beat.  One Pinot I recommend is Chehelam 3 Vineyard Pinot Noir from Oregon.  Silky with tastes of cherries, cloves, and red berries along with plenty of acidity to cut the fat in the salmon.  So head out to the backyard, fire up the grill, and enjoy a great meal! (A-, $20)

Wine Wednesday Pick- Laurent Miquel Nord Sud 2007 Syrah

I was spending some time at one of my favorite wine shops and came across a bottle that I couldn’t pass up in hopes it would be a great mid-week wine.  Laurent Miquel Nord Sud 2007 Syrah comes from Languedoc, which is in the South of France.  Languedoc is a great wine region because it produces wonderful wines that are often priced far lower than some of France’s more notable regions (think Bordeaux and Burgundy).  This wine is a perfect example!

Laurent Miquel Nord Sud 2007 Syrah is 100% Syrah from France.  It has 13.5% alcohol and retails for around $14.

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the wine

This Syrah has enticing, earthy aromas of plum, dark chocolate, and dark currants.  At first sip, flavors of berries and dark chocolate come alive.  Then tastes of pepper are shine through with a touch of minerality and a lift of acidity.  A delicious wine priced very fairly!

My Wine Rating- A-

Food Pairing Suggestions- Pair this wine with rack of lamb, burgers, or a pizza with black olives and mushrooms.
