A Rich and Rustic Pinot Noir- Belle Glos Meiomi 2009 Pinot Noir

I am not one for “fruit bomb” Pinot Noirs.  I love savory Pinots with a nice dose of acidity to give the finish a lift.  When I saw that Meiomi got the majority of its grapes from the central coast of California, I was betting on more of the fruity, sweet Pinot.  Thank goodness I was wrong…

About the Wine- From the Winery

Belle Glos Meiomi 2009 Pinot Noir is 100% Pinot Noir from vineyards in Monterey, Sonoma, and Santa Barbara counties.  It has 13.9% alcohol and retails for $22.  For more information see www.Meiomiwines.com

Now The Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

Meiomi pours a deep ruby in the glass.  The nose is rich with notes of plum, oak, and cherry.  Tastes of dark fruit are enveloped in oak and savory herbs.  The earthy tannins are followed by a smooth finish (would have liked a little more acidity but still a great find).  An incredible Pinot Noir for right around $20!

My Wine Rating- B+

Food Pairing Suggestions- A great match with roasted duck, smoked salmon, or a burger with grilled mushrooms and onions.

  1. Pinot Noir is my favorite and no I didn’t start liking it after it was the main focus in Sideways 🙂 I will be on the lookout for this one since I’m not a big fan of fruity Pinot’s as well.

    1. It’s really impressive…especially since it’s pretty easy to find for around $17-18. Let me know what you think if you try it!

  2. Santa Barbara county has some of the best pinot around in my opinion. That perfect amount of sweet and it always goes down so smoothly. Wine tasting there is always such a treat, I always go home with bottles of pinot and chardonnay. Set for a few weeks! This upcoming wine season should be a good one, hopefully the weather allows for a good harvest. I love staying at the South Coast Inn (www.goleta-hotel.com). The best place to stay if you are looking to wine taste in or around Santa Barbara.

  3. A good pinot in Santa Barbara is just the taste of pure heaven! I love wine tasting in these parts and I’ve always had a good time doing it. I cannot wait for this upcoming season, I’ll make my way to the coast and enjoy all the pinots, reds, and other great wines the region has to offer! I really enjoy staying at the South Coast Inn (www.goleta-hotel.com) whenever I travel there, close to some great wine and the rooms are sensational.

  4. Had a 2011 pinot with my wife, thought the wine paired very well with the steak at Sullivan’s in Indianapolis. E will go back.
