I must admit I am definitely a little picky about Chardonnay. I prefer a bottle that doesn’t overpower my taste buds with sweet oak and butter. I was a little wary of trying Mer Soleil’s 2008 Chardonnay but it turns out they have found a wonderful way to lift their wine above the dimensions of oak and butter to a level of complexity and balance.
Mer Soleil 2008 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands. It has 14.5% alcohol and retails for $32. For more information see www.mersoleilvineyard.com
Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine
Mer Soleil Chardonnay pours a resonant gold in the glass. The nose is aromatically intriguing with aromas of oak, banana, and citrus. The palate is rich without being overpowering. Tastes of lemon, coconut, and oak are interwoven and followed with a long, creamy finish. Mer Soleil has managed to deliver a Chardonnay with notes of oak and butter that are beautifully balanced instead giving oaky and buttery notes that overpower the wine and the food that you are enjoying it with. I will definitely be enjoying this wine again soon. Cheers!
