I always enjoy having the chance to try a new wine from a small vineyard. There are also times when, not only do I enjoy trying the wine, I actually feel lucky I am sipping it. This is exactly what happened to me over the weekend. I received the first vintage ever, a Zinfandel, from a very small winery in Healdsburg called PALMARIUM. There were only 254 cases produced of their 2009 Zin and I was fortunate enough to experience a bottle for myself.
PALMARIUM 2009 Zinfandel is 100% Zinfandel from the Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County. It has 15.7% alcohol and retails for $33. For more info see www.PalmariumWines.com
Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine
PALMARIUM pours an intense purple in the glass. It has an alluring nose of blackberry, oak, and spice that entices you to experience the wine. The wine is rich and lush with tastes of juicy, dark berries and vanilla (definitely decant the wine for an hour or so to let it open up and balance out). The tannins are silky and smooth. The spicy finish nicely balances the fruit making you want to experience the wine all over again.
PALMARIUM has produced a luxurious and delicious Zinfandel that is one of the best Zins I have tried all year. An amazing first vintage and I see nothing but great things in the future for this small winery. Cheers!
My Wine Rating- A-
Food Pairing Suggestions- PALMARIUM pairs perfectly with a juicy steak, braised shortribs, or roasted duck
